Deion Branch skips mandatory minicamp
The Dirt:
Deion Branch, the 2005 Super Bowl MVP, stayed away from the New England Patriots mandatory minicamp on Tuesday because he is upset with his contract. The team’s top wide receiver, in the final year of a five-year contract he signed after New England drafted him in the second round in 2002, would like an extension.
The Spin: When a guy catches 3 touchdowns in a Super Bowl and has proven to be your best receiver, you have to pay him. However, this isn’t the first Patriots contract dispute, and they have proven to be a team run by a strong system that plug pretty much any hole, so Branch would be well advised to tread carefully.
