Northern Colorado punter competition is extremely intense

Many teams have gone through quarterback controversies. But a punter controversy - this might be a first.
Backup punter Mitch Cozad “allegedly” attacked starter Rafael Mendoza on Monday.
By stabbing him.
In his kicking leg.
Cozad has been excused from the team and kicked out of his dorm. Mendoza will miss at least this week’s game against Texas State but is expected to recover fully.
This is kind of similar to Nancy Kerrigan getting clubbed in the knees, except that Cozad did the dirty work himself instead of hiring some uneducated slug like Tonya Harding did. So…you kind of have to give him credit for that.
Cozad is probably suffering from some pretty low self esteem. Punters aren’t exactly the most loved or valued players on the field - their very presense is an indication of total failure. Not only is he a lowly punter, he’s a backup…for Northern Colorado. Which is about the same as being the backup fry cook at a gas station McDonald’s.
