Dirk Nowitzki fined $5000 for kicking ball into stands

Dirk NowitzkiThe Dirt:

The NBA fined Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki $5,000 on Monday for kicking the ball into the stands following Game 5 of the finals.

The league called the penalty its standard fine for such an action. Detroit’s Richard Hamilton and Sacramento’s Bonzi Wells had to pay $5,000 after throwing balls off the court during games this season.

The Spin: There’s a profoundly large cloud of frustration hanging over the Mavs locker room right now. Dallas, as a team, shot the same number of free throws in that game as Dwyane Wade. They were playing without their #1 scorer off the bench (Jerry Stackhouse, suspended in what many percieve to be a puzzling, if not inconsistant and over-the-top suspension), they were charged with a time out that they claim they didn’t call which prevented them from setting up a decent final shot, they are called for a foul on a shot that they claim shouldn’t have happened (claiming Wade went over and back bringing the ball upcourt) and on top of that they lose by just one point. In overtime. On the road. Kicking a ball into the stands? They’re lucky he didn’t kick Joe Crawford’s head into the stands.
