White Sox close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano

Alfonso Soriano

The White Sox are “extremely close” to trading for Nationals outfielder Alfonso Soriano, a source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine’s Tim Kurkjian. The Nationals have great interest in pitcher Brandon McCarthy.

Soriano to the Whte Sox would make things a lot more interesting in the AL Central, with the Sox 6.5 games behind the leading Tigers - who were previously thought to be the favorites to land Soriano. This could just be a smoke screen sent out by the Nationals to get the Tigers to act, since the Nationals have said they are interested in prospects, of which the Tigers have plenty. The Tigers (and 3 other teams most likely to get Soriano, including Chicago and the Yankees) have been waiting for the price to drop on Soriano.

Chicago swiping Soriano from under Detroit’s nose would be quite the coup, that’s why if the Tigers are smart they would kidnap Soriano and in his place send Bobby Higginson wearing an Alfonso Soriano mask.
