Tigers inquiring about Bobby Abreu, Phillies not interested
The Dirt:
The Detroit Tigers appear to have serious interest in acquiring Phillies rightfielder Bobby Abreu.
They have not talked deal specifics, but Phillies general manager Pat Gillick acknowledged that the scouting circles have been abuzz with the Tigers’ rabid interest in lefthanded hitting.
No thanks, Gillick said.
“I know they’re looking for lefthanded hitters, but we’re not getting rid of hitting right now,” Gillick said.
The Spin: Abreu has a no-trade clause which he, when asked, didn’t seem to interested in waiving for Detroit. Earlier rumors had him willing to waive the clause for Boston or New York, and that’s about it. How a .280 hitter with 8 homeruns gets to strongarm his team like a Ken Griffey Jr. or Terrell Owens is beyond us, but if he can, more power to him.
