Dusty Baker’s job is safe for rest of season

Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Thursday that he will stick with Dusty Baker as his manager for the rest of the season.
“As far as the rest of the season goes, I let Dusty know today that he would be staying the rest of the year,” said Hendry. “There won’t be any discussions or questions to be asked about extensions now or anything like that. But I let him know that the next couple months, I felt it was best for the club that he complete the season and not worry about that.”
Dusty has to be thrilled. Basically Hendry is saying that there’s no hope for this season, so there’s no advantage in getting rid of him early, so he might as well stick with him. Great vote of confidence in a guy who has been without his best hitter and two best pitchers for a large part of the year.
Maybe if Baker had sacrificed a goat at the beginning of the season things might be different, but he obviously didn’t, which means he will be looking for a job this winter.
